Railsplitter.

The Emancipator.

Honest Abe.

Most commonly known by the name… Abraham Lincoln.

From a beginning in what was once described as a “hunter’s hut not fit to be a home” to an end as a great American martyr, Abraham Lincoln lived a life of strong morals, hard work, and continued education.

Much like our beloved George Washington, Abe didn’t have much in the way of a formal education, but that didn’t stop him from learning. He read anything he could get his hands on. In fact, that’s how he formed a profound respect for Washington and the Founding Fathers. They wrote the Declaration of Independence which, alongside the Constitution, steered Lincoln’s moral code. He staunchly believed that the Declaration of Independence represented hope for freedom for all people, and that the Constitution of the United States must be upheld.

Lincoln himself once said, “In this country, one can scarcely be so poor, but that, if he will, he can acquire sufficient education to get through the world respectably.” But we all know old Abe was a man of action. He proved his own statement by teaching himself law and becoming a lawyer in Illinois by the age of 28! That ended up being his first step toward politics. Eventually, he would earn his way into office as the 16th President of the States of America.

Abraham Lincoln didn't care to dwell on his childhood, he summed that chapter of his life up to "the short and simple annals of the poor." But it's clear from his staunch belief in the power of self-education and his own success from it that Lincoln never let his beginning influence how his life would turn out. Growing from a curious child into an eloquent man allowed Abe to captivate audiences with his powerful words and firm beliefs.

Railsplitter: a political nickname given to Abraham Lincoln during his campaigns for President. Abe was proud of his ability to swing an ax, but if he'd known that his cousin would truss a couple fence rails together and show them off as Abe's handy work to crowds, he would have had choice words for the scheme! For better or for worse, though, Lincoln's supporters loved the Railsplitter, their six-foot, lanky candidate whose ax work was legend.

Abe Lincoln, Rail Splitter
In 1860, Abraham Lincoln ran for President as the ‘Railsplitter’, a richly successful marketing ploy which helped the American people to feel a camaraderie with the massive, awkward Abe. Mr. Richard J. Oglesby, a savvy Illinois politician, had the original idea to call attention to Lincoln’s long hi…

Did you know that the telegraph played a monumental role in the Union victory in the Civil War? The United States Postal Corps was formed to lay telegraph wire across miles of warzone to connect the White House and commanding officers to their generals in the field. Abraham Lincoln was in awe of the technology and he spent many a night on a cot in the room where the telegraph was kept.

Frederick Douglass was an outspoken, freed former slave whose passion and zeal moved the nation closer to the abolition of slavery. Douglass also played a key role in educating President Abraham Lincoln on the feelings of the black citizens of the United States, both freed and enslaved. In one encounter, he pushed into Abe's office and yelled at him before his staff and onlookers. Lincoln's good nature and humor defused Douglass, but he never forgot the man's words.

The Emancipation Proclamation was Abraham Lincoln's last gift to the United States. He firmly believed that all people have a right to improve their station and to work and earn a fair wage. He reviled that these rights were taken from slaves. In 1863, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation passed. 2 years after Lincoln's assassination in 1865, it would be reformed and adopted as the 13th amendment to the Constitution.

Abraham Lincoln couldn’t stand injustice. He always hated the sight of someone being mistreated. Perhaps it was because his own father wasn’t a gentle man himself that he couldn’t stand the sight of abuse. Whatever the cause, his desire to cure social oppression evolved over the course

Long before televised debates, Lincoln got some good advice from an 11-year-old girl who wrote him to say he might look better with a beard. Apparently he listened and became the first bearded US president. Looking at both sides of this Miles Standish-designed coin, you can see how much the weight of the presidency aged Old Abe in his short 4 years in office. The loss of his son, a civil war, and the fight to end slavery took their toll, and finally, his life.

Abraham Lincoln’s Legacy
Abraham Lincoln was no stranger to ridicule, especially when it came to his looks. Back in 1860, photographs of the Presidential candidates weren’t posted everywhere. Photos were drawn and descriptions were written in papers, which often depicted Abe as a jumbled mess of long arms and legs and hair

President Abraham Lincoln didn't live to see most of his life's work come to fruition, but his son, Robert Todd Lincoln was able to be at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial: the American love letter to one of our favorite presidents. On the obverse of this stunning 2-oz coin: the 19 foot tall statue of Lincoln that guards the memorial. On the reverse: President Abe Lincoln, standing taller than the Memorial itself, just as his legacy is larger than life.
