An American Life: Abraham Lincoln Coin Series
Railsplitter.
The Emancipator.
Honest Abe.
Most commonly known by the name… Abraham Lincoln.
From a beginning in what was once described as a “hunter’s hut not fit to be a home” to an end as a great American martyr, Abraham Lincoln lived a life of strong morals, hard work, and continued education.
Much like our beloved George Washington, Abe didn’t have much in the way of a formal education, but that didn’t stop him from learning. He read anything he could get his hands on. In fact, that’s how he formed a profound respect for Washington and the Founding Fathers. They wrote the Declaration of Independence which, alongside the Constitution, steered Lincoln’s moral code. He staunchly believed that the Declaration of Independence represented hope for freedom for all people, and that the Constitution of the United States must be upheld.
Lincoln himself once said, “In this country, one can scarcely be so poor, but that, if he will, he can acquire sufficient education to get through the world respectably.” But we all know old Abe was a man of action. He proved his own statement by teaching himself law and becoming a lawyer in Illinois by the age of 28! That ended up being his first step toward politics. Eventually, he would earn his way into office as the 16th President of the States of America.

Railsplitter: a political nickname given to Abraham Lincoln during his campaigns for President. Abe was proud of his ability to swing an ax, but if he'd known that his cousin would truss a couple fence rails together and show them off as Abe's handy work to crowds, he would have had choice words for the scheme! For better or for worse, though, Lincoln's supporters loved the Railsplitter, their six-foot, lanky candidate whose ax work was legend.

Frederick Douglass was an outspoken, freed former slave whose passion and zeal moved the nation closer to the abolition of slavery. Douglass also played a key role in educating President Abraham Lincoln on the feelings of the black citizens of the United States, both freed and enslaved. In one encounter, he pushed into Abe's office and yelled at him before his staff and onlookers. Lincoln's good nature and humor defused Douglass, but he never forgot the man's words.

The Emancipation Proclamation was Abraham Lincoln's last gift to the United States. He firmly believed that all people have a right to improve their station and to work and earn a fair wage. He reviled that these rights were taken from slaves. In 1863, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation passed. 2 years after Lincoln's assassination in 1865, it would be reformed and adopted as the 13th amendment to the Constitution.

Long before televised debates, Lincoln got some good advice from an 11-year-old girl who wrote him to say he might look better with a beard. Apparently he listened and became the first bearded US president. Looking at both sides of this Miles Standish-designed coin, you can see how much the weight of the presidency aged Old Abe in his short 4 years in office. The loss of his son, a civil war, and the fight to end slavery took their toll, and finally, his life.
