It’s the season of gratitude and high time that we count our blessings. At 7k, we count YOU, our 7k family, as one of ours! Some of our other favorite blessings are the freedom to create our own destiny, the opportunity to make new friends every day, and the chance to continue learning. Here are a few stats that help us stay grounded:

• According to World Bank, an international organization that assists developing countries in improving their economies, 692 million people worldwide live in extreme poverty—that means they exist on less than $2.15 per day. If you are financially secure, it’s a blessing.

• In August, the World Health Organization identified the top causes of death worldwide as cardiovascular disease (specifically ischaemic heart disease and stroke) and respiratory disease and infection. If you’re healthy, it’s a blessing.

• In the United States, only 79 percent of adults are literate, The National Literacy Institute reported earlier this year. Even more concerning, 54 percent of U.S. adults read below a sixth-grade level. If you can read with fluency and comprehension, it’s a blessing.
But some years are tough, and if you’re in a bit of a slump right now, we get it. It is possible to be grateful for the good but beaten down by the bad at the same time.

When life has temporarily dealt you a rotten hand, we suggest this novel approach: curiosity. When you shift your energy from stress and sadness to genuinely wondering, “What will happen next?” or “What strengths will I develop because of this trial?” it takes a bit of the edge off the pain. Imagine walking into a get-together with estranged family members with the objective attitude of “I wonder how so-and-so is going to respond to me,” instead of diving deep into thoughts of “I really don’t want to do this.” Curiosity is a way to temporarily detach from strong emotions while still navigating hard things. And who knows? Maybe things will turn out better than you expect.

We are always trying to be grateful for what 7k has become with your help, and we hope you find gratitude no matter what season of life you find yourself in!
