The evolution of life is celebrated with a new series featuring an Ammonite fossil in sensational high-relief. Ammonites superficially resemble snails and nautilus, the marine creatures were however more closely related to octopus and squid.

Gas-filled chambers within the shell allowed them to move up and down the water column in search of prey and to avoid predation by Mosasaurs. The striking, red-gilded reconstruction of a partially excavated Ammonite represents the Devonian Period which lasted from 419-359 million years ago.

While fossils of the Ammonite’s head and tentacles are extremely rare, their shells are among the most abundant fossils and can in fact aid in determining the age of the rock they are found in.

A coin 470 million years in the making …

The hugely popular first issue of the new Evolution of Life series «Ammonite» raised high expectations and anticipation for its successor. The 2016 coin now presents the Ordovician period with a stunning, partially excavated trilobite, which is based on a real, 470-million-year-old fossil found near St. Petersburg, Russia. The original measures nearly 8 centimetres and belongs to the species Cheirurus ingricus. As expected of the series, the trilobite is minted in impressive relief with a brilliant red-gold finish.

The Ichthyosaur fossil is covered in rose-gold while the smartminting© relief accentuates the bony scleral eye ring and pointy teeth of this Triassic predator.

Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles that lived 250 to 90 million years ago. The various species resembled modern dolphins by convergent evolution or the development of similar traits in similar environments.

Mongolia is famous for its rich fossil record including dramatic species such as Velociraptor, known from the Jurassic Park movies. Now in its fourth year, the Evolution of Life series pays tribute to past eras by portraying extinct prehistoric creatures in luxurious rose-gilded smartminting relief on an antique finish rock matrix background.

In 2018, Evolution of Life takes from the sea to the skies with Pterosauria. The Mongolian coin portrays the native Noripterus parvus, that roamed Mongolian skies 140 million years ago with a wingspan of over four meters. Their fossils were first described from Central Mongolia in 1982.

Pterosauria represents the most detailed and finely gilded coin in the series to date. Even remnants of the delicate wing membranes are hinted at in the rock matrix. Pterosaurs were one of three groups of vertebrates that evolved powered flight alongside birds and bats.

This issue in the Evolution of Life series can be considered as a “new” dinosaur as the Sinraptor was officially discovered only 30+ years ago in China with an almost complete skeleton. The name Sinraptor comes from the Latin prefix “Sino” meaning Chinese and “Raptor” meaning robber. The fossil discovered in China measures 3 m in height and 7.5 m in length. Sinraptor was estimated to have weighed over a ton! A 150 million years ago the Sinraptor may have hunted other medium sized dinosaurs. This prehistoric killer is featured on this impressively detailed smartminting© high relief coin. It is plated in rose gold on an antique finish rock matrix background.
