7k statement on the assassination of Charlie Kirk

7k family,

We are saddened by the news of the assassination of Charlie Kirk along with the lives lost at Evergreen High School yesterday, and we are praying for all their loved ones.

Some of you may not know Charlie or the work he was engaged in, but many of you do and follow him closely. The way in which his life was taken is despicable and cowardly. The use of violence against someone with whom you disagree is the epitome of evil. Today being September 11 is unfortunately a solemn reminder of that.

Charlie was a thought leader who used logic, grace, and ideas—not violence—to try to change the things in the world he disagreed with. He used the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States to its fullest, not needing to resort to violence. People flocked to his events to try to debate him, change his mind, and ultimately hear his ideas communicated clearly. He leaned into the scariest thing most humans can do: put their ideas on the line to be tested, disproved, and criticized. Charlie was a brave man with purpose. Regardless of his ideology, we honor his bravery and courage to face criticism day in and day out for what he believed. We honor him for using words and ideas, not fear and violence, to change society. Ultimately, we honor him for defending and practicing free speech without hatred or vitriol.

I encourage everyone in the 7k community to refrain from hatred and mean sentiments toward those with whom we disagree. I encourage us to seek understanding and empathy, even if we cannot support or agree with the ideas or actions of our fellow man. We should stand up for truth and bravely do it with the power of ideas and love. The power to change for the better the worst parts of humanity is in our hands.

Let's change the world by uniting it, not dividing it.
