From an initial field of 550 entries, the COTY Nominating Committee narrowed the list to 100 contenders—10 coins across 10 categories. A global panel of experts then chose the category winners. Austria’s silver €20 “Supernova” edged out the competition to claim the 2025 Coin of the Year. Its concave obverse displays a vibrant, color-enhanced view of the Crab Nebula, derived from imagery captured by the Hubble Space Telescope.
